Stroboscope!!!

The waves in the ripple tanks as I mentioned earlier can be studied by looking through a stroboscope (pictured at the left). The stroboscope allows the observer to "Freeze" the wave so that it can be more accurately studied.

on page 470, number 35, problem A, is the answer suppose to be 8.0 cm? instead of 9.0cm?

The answer is 9.0 cm. Since the total distance from the top of the crest to the bottom of the trough is 18 cm, the amplitude is half. The amplitude is the measure from the rest position to the maximum displacement of the medium.
